Chinese nationalists are annoyed by colonial-era place names, such as Vladivostok, Tibet, and Hong Kong.
Vladivostok, a Russian city previously ruled by China, is traditionally known as 'sea-cucumber bay'.
The Chinese Ministry of Natural Resources has issued an edict requiring maps in Chinese featuring any of eight listed Russian places to show their historical Chinese names in brackets after their names in Russian.
Some Chinese nationalists believe that using the Chinese names for Russian places could encourage China to recover these territories as soon as possible.
Chinese media has been paying attention to the use of the Chinese word for Tibet, Xizang.
